Ann Roach

Based in Cheshire, Ann Roach is an artist who shares her knowledge and experience through workshops, classes and demonstrations.  She will also be happy to accept commissions.

I had always loved drawing and painting and was, as a child, encouraged by an artist grandfather and various teachers throughout school. Progression to Art College seemed inevitable. Having graduated from Kentish Art Colleges in Canterbury and Ravensbourne, Bromley, I married and travelled to East Africa, where I began teaching and illustrating.

The return to England was a time for raising three children and spending some years in social services, working with clients with special needs. In 1985, I was asked to teach colour, design and drawing skills to florists at Reaseheath College, Nantwich. The interest sparked in the florists led to me initiating an art course and these have snowballed ever since.

I am extremely proud of my keen, talented class participants. They are up for anything, take any strange seeming idea I throw at them, and challenge my ingenuity, judgement and experience. The Art Groups have had an exciting exhibitions of their work at the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe. The many successes they have achieved are an indication of the professional standard of their work. Many of the class have gone on to Art College. Many have exhibited in their own shows and work is frequently accepted for Open selected exhibitions such as the Three Counties, and Stoke Open.

It gives me immense pleasure to help, to inspire and to guide other artists. The weekly classes, workshops and art holidays I run in the UK and abroad prove very popular.

The energy spent in the challenge of teaching directs the mode of my own work. I usually work very quickly. Although comfortable using any media, I frequently work with watercolour and mixed media. I like to paint with an immediate spontaneous response to a given subject. I aim to capture the specific energy, life force or pathos of a figure, the particular characteristic vitality of a plant, or the atmospheric essence of a place. I use a wide range of media to build my paintings.

However, it is for my paintings of the nude figure that I am best known. I just love the constant excitement and inspiration that the figure provides. Attending ‘Life’ groups at the Barracks Studio, Newcastle, with a highly talented mix of people, keeps me ‘on my toes’! I try to find new ways, different materials, and various approaches to capture a pose or personality.

I am also a member of the Cheshire Artists Network and Cheshire Artists at Work. My studio is open to the public each year and my work is exhibited extensively and has gained many awards. I have also produced several Art books.

My online gallery contains most of my work to date.
